3D Archaeology and GIS in Archaeology

GIS has been serving archeologists and researchers for the past 30 years. The debate regarding how this technology can offer more insights into the archeological sites and contribute to a better understanding of different ancient landscapes is still going on.

Recently, we have seen a growing demand for 3D archeology, which apparently makes it easier for archeologists and researchers to learn more about the history and construction of these monuments.

As important as it is, most types of archeology packages are compatible with only two-dimensional data. There is no denying that the introduction of 3D GIS has brought a major change in the way we handle archeology at labs and in fields significantly. It also shows how 3-dimensional technology in the GIS world can improve their efficiency and make them better at addressing archeological issues in a more efficient way.

Recently, we have seen tremendous growth in 3D models and acquisition. Considering the capability of the 3D technology, it is safe to say that if the technology is combined with GIS, it can provide researchers with detailed pictures of the excavation sites. From a single artifact to a large agricultural field, the technology can be used for nearly all types and sizes of lands. What once seemed a big goal for scientists and researchers has now become a reality with the innovation of 3D technology. Now, it is possible for archeologists to produce 3D models, the output of which, can be compared with the output derived from traditional methods like laser scanning.

There is a clear difference between the data obtained from the traditional acquisition tools and 3D model techniques. Scientists can get clear insights into ancient landscapes, as well as, the history of the world if they use GIS tools in conjunction with 3D models. Not only will it give a clear picture of the object in question, but it speed up the research and any kind of archeology project.
