Crowd simulation, as the name suggests, is the process of simulating the growth and movement of different characters. Computer-generated 3D images of humans in a crowd setting have been gaining immense traction in today’s time. While there are a plethora of applications of crowd simulation, the most common ones that are used extensively in the industry are evacuations and risk planning. Take the video games and entertainment industry, for example. People need a realistic-looking crowd in order to come up with fantastic scenes in videos, movies, and commercials. These are called the real-time virtual crowds that can populate any city or the virtual space seamlessly.
Gathering data about large crowds has become quite a common phenomenon in today’s times. It is done for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to entertainment purposes and people’s safety. Unfortunately, the current approaches used in crowd simulation are based on physical interactions mainly.
These methods show you how people interact with others in crowds. These techniques are not quite viable when it comes to identifying the individual’s behavior and their interaction with the physical environment. The impact of a group on an individual’s behavior can be so intense that it can mean a complete behavioral change in the person. It could lead to panic attacks in some situations, especially when the individual is put in a crowd where they feel different and uncomfortable.
Crowd Simulation in Virtual Setting
One way to ensure the accuracy of the crowd simulation is by conducting it in a virtual setting. There is no denying that ignoring these aspects could affect the quality of the crowd greatly. The GIS is used for the simulation of dense crowds. It tells you the unplanned and sudden evacuation of people from the crowds and other activities that might threaten public safety.
We need more detailed and comprehensive models that could give us a better picture of why certain people disassociate from groups. It also helps people understand the psychological and social behavior of people. The fluid dynamics models are most commonly used to explain and understand people’s changing behaviors and the way they interact with large crowds, especially in evacuation scenarios.
How Does it Work?
The models are quite simple, and all they are used for is understanding people’s behavior against their surrounding forces. There have been quite a few models proposed in this field. These things factor in certain psychological aspects, such as motivation, stress, emotions, focus, and so on. These studies are conducted to analyze the psychological behavior of a human or how exactly they respond to certain environments when they are in a crowd.
However, as mentioned earlier, we always need a more comprehensive model that could combine the psychological and social behavior patterns of people for a better understanding of how humans react to certain environments. Thanks to the GIS and the latest innovation in the industry that have made it possible for people to understand changes in the behavioral pattern of people.
