SCIMAP is one of the most popular remote-sensing tools used specifically to identify the areas that are most likely to get affected by water pollution. It is also used for identifying the common source of pollutants that might pose threat to the life of aquatic animals. The tool has proven the most effective technology for identifying nutrients, microbial, and sediment pollution. The pollution doesn’t only pose health risks for humans, but it can cause significant damage to the aquatic life affected by the contaminants. One of the common causes of the growing levels of water pollution is the waste we discharge into the water. Pollution becomes a major cause of concern when its concentration in the water raises. This might lead to a serious issue for the life of fish and other aquatic animals. This leads us to the question how can you make the water in the rivers and oceans again? In order to come up with the most accurate and effective strategy for controlling the growing level of pollution in the water, it is important to identify the areas where the pollution is generating from. It is important to note that not every field is polluted. The two main factors that can make a particular area  problem are:
  • A field that produces an incredibly high level of pollution
  • An area linked to rivers and lakes
The purpose of developing SCIMAP was to identify the areas that are the biggest cause of concern when it comes to aquatic life. The project was initially launched by Durham and Lancaster Universities. The project has got approval from many reputable and licensed environmental and land-based agencies. The primary purpose of launching this project was to help government agencies, non-government agencies, and landowners. By identifying the areas that are the leading cause of pollution or the fields generating and spreading pollution to the water, it will become much easier for researchers and scientists to deploy a set of appropriate strategies for controlling water pollution. How is SCIMAP Used? Note that pollution can’t be eliminated completed until the source of pollution or the factors causing it are identified. That’s where SCIMAP comes into play. It is an online tool sued for identifying diffuse pollution so that researchers can get a clear picture of the areas causing and affected by water pollution. What sets SCIMAP apart from other apps and software used for identifying the source of pollution is that this tool doesn’t make quantitative projections. As we have mentioned earlier, the primary goal of implementing SCIMAP is to identify the problematic areas within the landscape. You need the basic knowledge of GIS in order to access the desktop version of this software. This software is available for public use. In fact, you could use it for free as long as you don’t have the intention of using it for any commercial applications. If you want to use it commercially, you are supposed to collect the license for the same from Durham University. The information regarding how to use it is available on its official website.
